Lazio
Only a long footbridge connects Civita di Bagnoregio to the rest of the world. On a tuffaceous spur, in the heart of Tuscia, between the Tiber valley and Lake Bolsena, it is one of the most fascinating villages in Lazio, albeit undermined by the erosion of the fragile tuffaceous rock on which it was built. From its alleys, the eye can reach the spectacular Valle dei Calanchi, deep furrows in the ground created over millennia by the erosion of rainwater.
Caprarola is dominated by the imposing Palazzo Farnese, built in the 16th century: Alessandro Farnese made it his headquarters, making the village an architecturally unique place. With its frescoed interiors, the magnificent helicoidal staircase that Alessandro Farnese used to climb on horseback, the Sala del Mappamondo with its maps depicting the then known world, the Sala degli Angeli with its special echo effect and the magnificent Italian garden, the Palazzo is a jewel not to be missed. In order to enhance the view, Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola created the Via Dritta, today known as Nicolai, a long sloping perspective canal to build which 'gutted' the town in two, dividing the medieval town into two districts, Corsica and Sardinia.
The Sacred Wood of Bomarzo, also known as the Park of Monsters, is a garden populated by dozens of sculptures of fantastic animals, mythological figures and small buildings immersed in vegetation, commissioned in the 16th century by an eccentric prince who was assisted by one of the most famous architects of the time, Pirro Ligorio. It is a realm of frightening creatures, more often enigmatic, that stimulate the imagination and play. Much loved by children for its aura of mystery, it is the place to spend a few hours in nature immersed in another dimension.
Sutri stands in a position of great historical importance: in fact, the Via Francigena, which led from northern Europe to Brindisi, passed through here on its way to distant lands. Many vestiges of the past remain in its territory, including a Roman amphitheatre completely dug into the tuff, an Etruscan necropolis, the Romanesque Cathedral and the very special Church of the Madonna del Parto: built in the Middle Ages on a previous pagan building dedicated to the god Mithras, it is entirely dug into the tuffaceous rock and preserves a very ancient depiction of pilgrims on their way, which still reminds us of the great spirituality that has always been experienced in these places.
